At the brothel, he meets a good-hearted courtesan named Chandramukhi , who falls in love with him. Paro learns from her new husband that he has married her only to be a mother to his children and lady of the estate, but that his love is only for his late first wife. A unique bond was formed between both as he could share with her the intense pain of his unfulfilled love for Paro. The movie powerfully depicts the prevailing social customs in Bengal in the early 1900s, which are largely responsible for preventing the happy ending of a genuine love story. Paro alias Parvati is a young woman from a middle class Bengali family also a Brahmin, but belonging to a slightly lower status in terms of caste, affluence and status.
